The primary purpose of the embassy is to assist citizens of their country who are traveling to or living in the host country. State diplomatic staff also conducts interviews with citizens of the host country who wish to travel to the state for business, education, or tourism. Embassy staff members interact with representatives of the host government, local businesses, nongovernmental organizations, media and educational institutions, and individuals to better understand the state and its policies and to cooperate in their interests. Embassy officials analyze the political and economic situation in the host country and report to the State Department. on issues that affect the state.
They help businesses find partners and customers and may train the host government’s police and army to make the country more secure. They also sponsor educational, professional and cultural exchanges to introduce new and recognized leaders to the state and facilitate connections among students, academics, scientists, entrepreneurs, political, religious and civil society figures.
Although embassies and consulates employ citizens of the embassy’s country, most of the staff comes from the host country. These staff members are essential to the success of any embassy because they know the local culture, have the necessary skills, or are well-connected to government and civil society leaders.
